A RAFT of new rules have come into place on the MOT test.
Around a dozen items are now testable that were not previously part of the test. This is to keep in line with an EU directive that sought to harmonise vehicle testing across Europe.
New items that now form part of the test include stability programmes such as ESP, as well as newer types of tyre pressure monitoring and airbag malfunction –m essentially anything that switches a dashboard warning light on.
Speaking about the revisions last year, Andrew Cattell, a manager at VOSA said: “If a light is on, it means something isn’t working properly – meaning there is something wrong with the vehicle. “
Additionally, new rules on lighting mean that only modifications and upgrades, such as HID kits will only be permitted if ‘type approved’. Checks on certain types of towbar electrics, battery security and in inspection for damaged wiring will also now be part of the test.
