Victory in struggle to make VMs hand over part info in electronically readable form

The independent motor industry has heralded a major breakthrough, as new EU legislation is set to increase both the amount of information that vehicle manufacturers will have to hand over – as well as improving the way in which it is supplied.

The European Commission last week amended the ‘Euro 5’emissions regulation by passing a new law that regulates the access to the electronic spare parts identification.

Colin Parlett, from the RMI Independent Garage Association (IGA), gave evidence during the meeting which provided the independent sector the opportunity to voice their concerns regarding the disclosure of technical information and the urgent need to provide diagnostic tool manufacturers with relevant information to enable them to produce multipurpose scan tools.

Stuart James, IGA Director commented “We are pleased that the RMI were given the opportunity to voice our thoughts regarding how technical information is accessed by our members and other independent repairers. We have positioned ourselves to ensure we are fully involved in the process so we are able to represent the interests of our members on such an important industry subject.”

Michel Vilatte, President of the European federation of the independent aftermarket FIGIEFA, welcomes the EU Commission’s decision: "This is a good day for Europe’s motorists” he said.  “This decision lays the basis for independent aftermarket providers continuing to be a real alternative to the vehicle manufacturers’ service networks.”

However, the FIGIEFA president is also cautious: “The new law is a step in the right direction. Nonetheless, we ask the European Commission to accompany its implementation carefully in order to make sure that vehicle manufacturers will respect their obligations.“ He adds: “Only if the independent aftermarket will get the information in a useable electronic form will this also serve its purpose.”
