The UK's network of bodyshops have appealed for the laws surrounding the aquisition of vehicles that have been written off to be tightened up.
“We feel that it is time for a review of how the repair quality and safety of previous total loss or ‘write off’ vehicles are monitored and verified to ensure consumers are afforded some protection.” Graham Threlfall, Head of RMI National Association of Bodyshops (NAB), commenting on recent news on insurance write-offs by Dorset Trading Standards.
The organisation says that the news highlights the concerns consumers have around buying previously written off vehicles and the responsibilities that car traders have to correctly describe vehicles and to ensure they disclose all relevant information to the consumer.
Presently, the law allows anyone to purchace a written off vehicle and return it to the road, provided the damage has been assesed to be repairable.
