The week in which the clocks go back really does see an increase in accidents – at least according to car rental firm Enterprise.
Exceptionally wet weather may also have contributed to the rise.
Number crunchers at the company have worked out that there was a 38% rise in rentals from insurance companies this week, compared with last week.
This follows the trend from previous years. In November 2010 the firm saw a 17% increase in rentals over the whole month, compared with October of that year.
Mike Nigro, a manager at the firm says: “The combination of darker conditions and the end of summer weather is a real problem for road safety. Every driver should be aware of the day the clocks change and ensure they take extra care.”
