What is Top Tech?
Top Technician is a skills competition created 10 years ago. Its continuing mission is to reward technical excellence within the workshop trade and highlight, to a rather cynical and suspicious motoring public, what a skilled and vital role trained and committed technicians have.
Top 5 reasons technicians give as to why they enter Top Technician:
- To meet other experienced technicians from across the UK and swap tips
- To benefit from discounted tickets to Top Technician Live
- To gain exclusive access to the Top Technician Forum
- To gain publicity for themselves and their business
- Oh, and the prize package is worth well over £10,000!
Enter this year's competition to recognise and reward the best techs in the UK www.toptechnician.co.uk.
The competition, which is open to both independent and franchised dealer technicians, consists of an online test followed by practical assessments for the top 12 candidates. The best six are selected to compete in the finals at the Honda Institute in Slough, from where the eventual winner and runner-up are chosen.
To make sure the competition's standards are of the highest level, all the questions in Top Technician are compiled by chief judge Ian Gillgrass from the Institute of the Motor Industry.
Ian ensures assessment topics are diverse, probing every area of technicians' skills, from diagnostics and wheel alignment to exhaust gas analysis, electronics and beyond.

Gareth Edwards, is the current champion and was crowned Top Technician 2012 back in May at Top Technician Live, Mercedes-Benz World
Gareth, a 34 year-old technician at Cawdor Cars in Aberystwyth, had reached the finals of the competition for the past few years and deservedly took the title this year.

Chief Judge
Commenting on what is undoubtedly the ultimate scrutiny of a technician’s professional skills, ‘Top Technician 2012’ chief examiner Ian Gillgrass of the Institute of the Motor Industry, (IMI) – the competition’s ongoing technical partner – said: “Gareth’s achievement is outstanding. The pace of advancement in vehicle systems is relentless, so every year the examiners have to make the tests more searching and intensive. Gareth’s performance through every phase of the competition was of the highest order – right out of the top drawer of his toolbox. All technicians have to constantly raise their game to stay abreast of the technology, and Gareth thoroughly merits his place amongst the elite ranks of past Top Technician winners.”
The Top Technician competition is organised by the leading trade journal, ‘Aftermarket’, and is open to workshop technicians from all sectors of the UK vehicle servicing industry.
