Despite it being one of the most safety-critical vehicle components, brake fluid - specifically the temperature-tested condition of brake fluid - is completely ignored in the annual MOT test. While this surprising omission has never been satisfactorily explained by the DVSA, nationwide research initiated by Comma and conducted through independent workshops showed that the brake fluid in over half (52%) of the cars tested at 200°C or less and therefore needed replacement sooner rather than later in order to restore full braking efficiency. Most disturbingly, nearly a third (29%) had a potentially lethal temperature reading of 181°C or less and needed immediate brake fluid replacement.

The fault code reader is always a useful tool for a quick diagnosis of vehicle issues, especially those where the MIL illuminates. The Bosch OBD 150 is small enough to fit in the palm of your hand but detailed enough to help find problems. Working to EOBD standards, both units are easy to use, provide exhaust relevant diagnostic data, display and allow fault codes to be reset. The OBD 150 supports all ten OBD modes, provides a comprehensive trouble-shooting function and displays graphical representation of actual values via a multi-line display. In addition, the OBD 150 can receive firmware updates via its USB port. We had a unit in to test and it is simple yet detailed, providing enough information to solve common issues or provide a first-step to a detailed diagnostic check.


Individually tested air mass meters

A new range of the latest generation Intermotor and Fuel Parts air mass meters are now available from Standard Motor Products Europe. These provide their output signal to the ECU by pulse width modulation rather than analogue voltage, meaning the signal is less susceptible to electrical noise. They feature a fast response, thin film sensor and use a micro-processor to produce a consistent and reliable output. New applications include the Vauxhall Corsa D and Vauxhall Vectra C, Saab 9-5, Fiat 500, Ford Ka and many more. All SMPE air mass meters are individually tested and calibrated at the point of manufacture - an individual test report confirming the calibration data and serial number, comes with each unit.
