Right oil for the job

Air Conditioning from Denso
Published:  29 July, 2014

Denso's air conditioning range has been boosted by 29 new compressor references this month. The update covers applications for BMW 1, 3, 5, 7 Series and X5, Jeep Cherokee, Mercedes M-Class and S-Class, Toyota Yaris, RAV4, Land Cruiser and more. All of the references are OE quality. The programme now stands at 479 air con parts for 2,650 applications and include reciprocal, rotary and electrical types. All units are new, filled with the correct amount of oil and supplied as complete assemblies. Its thermal systems range also includes receiver driers, pressure switches, expansion valves and evaporators have also been added to the inventory this year. Engine cooling parts include radiators, oil coolers, heater cores, condensers, intercoolers, cooling fans and cabin blower fans. Denso spokesman Martin Pring says it's essential to use the right compressor oil: "Primarily to lubricate moving parts, i.e. the compressor and the expansion valve needle. It also enables heat to escape from the compressor. Insufficient lubrication due to universal oil is the second most frequent reason for DENSO A/C compressor damage and failure."

Revive discharged cells

Battery charger from CTEK
Published:  24 July, 2014

The Multi XS 25000 Extended is a rather clunky name for a nifty 25A smart battery charger from CTEK. It uses an eight-stage process to condition and charge any lead-acid battery. It comes with six metre cables and connects to the battery in situ. It is automatic, spark proof and protects against reverse-polarity. A Supply mode acts as a secure 12V power source, supporting the battery during diagnostic work or if it needs to be disconnected from the vehicle. A 'Recond' mode restores deeply discharged batteries which would otherwise be discarded.

This range now offers three models in response to a shift in the market. Manager Myles Pemberton explains: "There has been a shift in the market in recent years as a host of very cheap, low quality batteries have flooded the aftermarket and disrupted its balance. Therefore, although we will not compromise in the quality of the range, we have refreshed the product offering to reflect the requirements of our customers." Standard, Premium and Supreme models are made on its behalf by OE battery manufacturers and feature punch-plate technology which means their durability is beyond what cheaper alternatives offer. The revised range is now available at an entry level price.

Higher wet boiling point

Brake fluid from TRW
Published:  16 July, 2014

Ultra DOT 5.1 ESP is a brake fluid which has a higher wet boiling point than other standard fluids and retains its low viscosity, even at extremely low temperatures, says TRW. ESP combines anti-lock brakes and traction control with a lateral stability control function. It automatically applies brake pressure to the wheel/s and cuts engine throttle if necessary to help get the vehicle back to its intended path. This demands a quick reacting brake fluid to avoid skidding. This fluid has been designed to flow efficiently even at cold temperatures. TRW recommends you test brake fluid each year and change it at least every two (every year for DOT 3 systems) as contaminated fluid is the number one cause of brake failure.

Manual servicing can cause fault codes

Brakes from Delphi
Published:  15 July, 2014

As electronic control takes hold of vehicle systems, Delphi says it is vital for technicians to be armed with the knowledge and diagnostic tools needed to service and maintain them effectively. The firm warns that manually servicing the vehicle can confuse the control system and result in fault codes. Using the example of electric handbrake systems, these must have their ECUs engaged while winding back the calipers so the pad position is indexed, essential when replacing brake pads so the unit knows the thickness of the pads so it can engage correctly. Delphi uses over 20 friction materials in its brake pad product line to closely match OE parts and they also feature an underlayer which has a higher proportion of resins than the main friction material, used by many OEMs to dampen noisy vibrations and provide a higher bonding strength with the back plate. Its pads also feature shims, slots and chamfers.

Special tools

Tools from Blue Print

Filter out water

Filters from Sogefi
Published:  08 July, 2014

Diesel3Tech technology is used by Sogefi - manufacturers of the Fram, CoopersFiaam and Purflux filter brands - to guarantee water separation efficiency to extend service life and replacement intervals. This was developed to work with new diesel fuels based on ultra-low sulphur diesel and first gen bio-diesel. These have the potential to damage high pressure injection systems. The first two layers of the filter element prevent particles entering the fuel and the third is a water-repelling mesh. This system suits all European diesel blends containing up to 30% biodiesel. Spokesman Nigel Duffield states: "Today's diesel engines are more demanding than ever in terms of system equipment and maintenance. In particular, they are extremely sensitive to contamination. A dirt particle can damage the fuel system irreparably, from the pump right through to the injector, and the smallest of water droplets can cause very expensive damage. Diesel3Tech sets new standards of diesel filter performance in these areas. Our other high performance diesel filter solutions include electronic fuel heaters and water sensors, for example, to fully protect modern Common Rail injection systems."

The ready-to-fit pumps come with a warranty of 12 months or 12,000 miles. AMK spokesman, Simon Salloway, said: "There is no doubt that you get what you pay for. It would be fair to say that AMK is not alone in being worried about the quality of some products, which are being distributed in our industry. This could have a catastrophic reaction if requirements for inferior cheaper priced products continue, as only one thing happens; the quality declines and the entire aftermarket could be the losers."
