Timing chains kits from Dayco

A number of timing chains and timing chain kits are new to Dayco's product line-up. The chain kit range includes all the necessary tensioners, sprockets and guides to enable you to complete a full chain replacement. The top 50 part numbers are offered to cover the vast majority of applications likely to enter the workshop. References of note include the GM derived 1.3 litre JTDm/JTD/MJTD units, one for the 1.0 litre Toyota models and one for the numerous Seat, Skoda and VW 1.2 litre applications. Individual chains are supplied for the popular BMW 2.0 litre TD and Ford's 1.8i.

  • Opportunities ahead 

    Over the last decade, sales of timing belt kits have increased and individual belt sales have declined as repairers take the wise decision to replace the belt alongside associated components. The next opportunity for workshops, according to Dayco, concerns the front-end auxiliary drive (FEAD) system which is subject to similar mileage to the timing drive system, so similar service principles should be applied to the auxiliary belt and its components. Some VMs have introduced a service interval for the auxiliary belt which will lead to extra revenue for independents. The firm supplies more than 700 tensioners and idlers to complement its 800 plus range of auxiliary belts. In addition, a belt in oil replacement cartridge for the Ford 'Lynx' 1.8-litre diesel unit has just been announced. As Ford's power transmission supply partner, it developed the world's first belt-in-oil drive system in 2008 which has been widely used across its portfolio of cars. This substitutes the chain driven system and includes the cartridge with the corresponding belt pulleys

  • Belt for Cosworth 

    A broken cam belt can result in bent valves at the very least so it's important that customers keep up with maintenance on their vehicle, especially if they have a classic car which needs more regular attention.   • Mounting sets 

    Accessory drive kits complete with V-ribbed belts and spanners are now offered by ContiTech after recently expanding its range of kits which comprise timing belt kits with the water pump included. It has also just started offering mounting sets for torsional vibration dampers, for use when TVDs need replacing and the manufacturer specifies these should be changed at the same time. Product manager Rene Borries says: "Previously, the workshops had to put a lot of effort themselves into identifying and obtaining the correct bolts for fastening the belt pulleys," often, direct from the VM. In other news, its website for belt drive components has been simplified to make it easier to find what you need.

  • Keeping the perfect temperature 

    The water pumps in ContiTech's belt kits with pump, are now badged ContiTech as the company now sources the components direct from the manufacturer. When changing the belt the firm recommends changing the water pump if it is driven by the belt. A faulty water pump can cause a lot of damage - such as an overheated engine or a damaged rotor drive which can then damage the timing belt.

  • Don't provide a partial repair 

    Vehicle manufacturers will continue to integrate engine systems in the pursuit of smaller, more efficient units which emit fewer and less harmful toxins. This has involved OE specialists such as Dayco developing solutions which bring systems together that traditionally have worked quite separately. An example of this can be seen on the BMW-PSA engine in the BMW Mini. The water pump is only activated when the temperature of the engine needs to be controlled. At start up, or when the engine is below its normal operating temperature, there's no drive to the water pump so the engine warms up quickly with less emissions and lower fuel consumption. At normal temperature, it is engaged by the friction wheel, which receives its drive from the crankshaft pulley. The friction wheel is controlled by the ECU and uses an electric motor and reduction gear to position the friction wheel pulley. Dayco has designed, developed and patented both the single-arm torsion bar tensioner, which replaces the traditional spiral spring tensioner and the motorised friction pulley, which drives the water pump on this engine. A range of 215 water pump kits are provided by Dayco and include an OE water pump along with the usual belt, tensioner and idler combination.
