Firstly, the negative. The unit did not have adapters available, either as part of the original package or as an option, to fit the chosen test vehicles - a Jaguar S-Type and an E46 BMW. All of the test vehicles' transmission units would have been fitted to other models produced by the respective manufacturers so they were not uncommon, in fact they are probably the types of transmissions the unit should be targeting. A scan through the documentation seemed to suggest that many of the original adapters were intended for the American market.

After tracking down suitable connectors and making adaptions as necessary, it was fairly straightforward to connect the TranServe unit into the transmission cooling lines. It is anticipated that if the vehicle provides easy access to its transmission cooling system and its connections match the adapters supplied with the unit, then carrying out a transmission service would be very simple.

A typical service procedure begins with running the engine and transmission to allow them to reach their normal operating temperatures. A treatment is then added to the transmission fluid (Wynn's Automatic Transmission Flush, naturally), you leave the engine to idle for ten minutes then flick a switch on the connected TranServe machine to carry out a replacement of the transmission fluid. The machine signals the end of the procedure via one of the indicator lights. All of these steps are illustrated in the documentation supplied with the unit.

    A job I was recently asked to look at had a bit of an odd symptom; it would run (apparently quite well), as long as the camshaft position sensor was unplugged. The previous history on the vehicle, a 2009 2.5 TDI VW Transporter, was very limited. During my initial inspection, I noticed that the vehicle was suffering from a slightly extended cranking time, which is quite normal for a cam sensor related issue, as the engine ECU cannot easily calculate which TDC is which.

    Wheel bearings are a component of the vehicle where friction is detrimental to their activity. The bearing must remain free and smooth in its workings in order to ensure the wheel can rotate without impediment.
