Vehicle specific coolants

Comma
As winter servicing begins, Comma is reminding technicians that today's cooling products have technically evolved and are just as specific in their applications as engine oils.
Three distinct categories of antifreeze/coolants are now used by vehicle manufacturers as 'original fill', namely Silicate-based, OAT (Organic Additive Technology) and Si-OAT (Silicated OAT). Each contains a unique mix of chemical additives which are added to the MEG and should be mixed with deionised water to provide winter protection from rust, pitting and cold temperatures.
Comma asserts that mixing any of these additives together will have unpredictable and potentially damaging effects to their efficiency so it's essential to top up or replace on a like-for-like basis.
It's essential to find out which type is used for the application in hand since coolant colour is not a reliable indicator of which technology a manufacturer has chosen for their models.
