Inside the brain of a Zafira

James Dillon considers when a repair is worth it

Published:  24 May, 2012

This month we are tackling an older Vauxhall Zafira 1.8 Petrol Auto (2002) which belongs to a friend of mine. The symptoms are that the customer had lost all throttle and the vehicle was idling at 1,200rpm continuously. It would clear itself temporarily from time to time but the fault always returned. To many experienced technicians reading this, a few likely causes will no doubt spring to mind. This engine Z18XE has a few, well known issues.  If we were to read the fault code description or corrective action from our scan tool or data source, we would see that the likely causes are either the Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor or the wiring to it, or the Throttle Control Motor or the wiring to it, or it could be an ECU fault.
