Covid-19 Pre-MOT safety check launched

A Covid-19 pre-MOT car safety check has been launched by B2C price comparison website BookMyGarage, intended to help address a predicted surge in dangerous vehicles on the road as a result of the six-month MOT exemption

DVSA data shows 1,446,818 cars failed the MOT test for a dangerous fault between April and September 2019, the last six-month period for which figures are available.

The16-point safety check acts a pre-MOT to identify faults. Normally £19.99, it is being offered free to NHS staff and key workers.

Owners considering the test are shown an online video which guides them through the basic safety issues they can diagnose for themselves, such as badly worn tyres. It then lists potential faults that can only be checked in a workshop, and the garages nearby offering the service.

Karen Rotberg, founder of BookMyGarage, said: “The service is resonating with car owners. 15% of those booking are NHS staff and key workers.”

Karen added: “67% of our network is open, although many businesses have reported low levels of customer awareness that garages are allowed to operate under the government’s lockdown rules. We are busy adding new independent and franchised garages to the network who are keen to let customers know they are open and able to take forward bookings.”
