Government eyes furlough wind-down

Published:  06 May, 2020

Garages that have put staff on furlough under the government scheme are likely to see the programme gradually scaled back from July.

Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak is expected to announce that the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme set up to enable businesses to survive through the COVID-19 lockdown will be gradually ended as restrictions on business activity are lifted. Lockdown restrictions are reviewed every three weeks, and the next deadline is tomorrow (Thursday 7 May).

The scheme was originally set to run from the start of May, but this was extended to the end of June.

In an interview with ITV News earlier this week, the Chancellor said the scheme would be ended in a planned manner: “I’m working, as we speak, to figure out the most effective way to wind down the scheme and to ease people back into work in a measured way.”
