• EV training must continue regardless of any 2030 shift 

  Commenting on the vital need to make sure a greater number of technicians undertake EV training, regardless of the 2030 ban on the sale of new internal combustion engine vehicles moving or not, IMI CEO Steve Nash said: “The government has a difficult job to do to balance the UK’s ability to be ready for the 2030 deadline with the hard to ignore environmental threats. • 39,000 mechanics now EV-qualified, but skills shortage remains warns IMI 

  39,000 UK mechanics were EV-qualified by the end of 2022, according to new figures from the IMI, up 14,800 on the previous year, but the uptake of the relevant skills needs to be accelerated to avoid a potential 16,000 technician shortfall by 2032, the organisation has warned.

• IMI: EV training qualifications predicted to fall 31% year-on-year 

  The number of newly qualified EV technicians in Q1 of 2023 was 10% lower than the same period in 2022, and the IMI is predicting a 31% year on year drop for Q2 in its latest IMI EV Technician Forecast Report.

  LKQ Euro Car Parts has published the 2022 course schedule for its LKQ Academy training arm, and the company is aiming to provide EV and hybrid training for at least 3,000 technicians over the next 12 months.

• IMI Techsafe EV programme gets big push at Northgate 

  Vehicle hire firm Northgate is putting 1,500 of its staff through the IMI’s Techsafe EV training programme for vans, with the same number again doing an awareness course, alongside more EV training for apprentices.
