Pied Piper of Perth to lure UK mechanics Down Under?

Published:  20 February, 2023

Car mechanics are among the essential workers that are set to be urged to take up a life Down Under this week, as a delegation from the state of Western Australia visits the UK looking for a host of professionals to take up hard-to-fill roles on the other side of the world.

The UK is not the only country experiencing acute skills shortages across a number of industries, and vehicle technicians are among a host of occupations where the state, which includes Perth, the most remote city on Earth, needs more people. Others on the list include police officers, dentists, teachers, midwives, miners, nurses and doctors.

Police Defence Industry Minister Paul Papalia is heading up the eight-day mission, that will see him lead a team of recruiters on a tour of the UK from Saturday (25 February) to meet potential candidates. Cities being visited are set to include Bristol, Edinburgh and London, along with Dublin in Ireland. Also on the mission will be representatives from the Western Australia government, as well as the Australian Hotel Association and Motor Trade Association.

Police and Defence Industry Minister Paul Papalia said: "Safety, stability and sunshine - Western Australia has a lot to offer UK and Irish workers. As a proud Western Australian, I am looking forward to leading a mission that will be loudly and proudly promoting what makes our State a great place to work and live. Across eight days and four cities we will be spreading the word to UK and Irish workers that now is the time to move and be part of Western Australia's bright future."

The delegation will be looking to remind Brits that salaries in Western Australia are often more than 50% higher than the UK average for the same role, with a lower cost of living, and around 3,200 hours of sunshine in Perth annually.

The mission will also be promoted via a £172,000 promotional campaign using the motto 'Western Australia - It's Like No Other', that will include pub takeovers and other events.
